Critical Futures

Submission Guidelines

If you like the writing that you see on Critical Futures and you write similar kinds of fiction and would like that work included as part of Critical Futures, please send me a copy in either a plain text file, or as the body of a plain text email to editor@criticalfutures.com. I can’t promise that there’s room for everybody, or that every story is right for this site, but I think it’s important to make it clear from the onset that this isn’t just about me.

I’m particularly partial to some kinds of stories. Including:

  • Science Fiction, generally horror/slipstream and fantasy (urban or otherwise) are not the kind of thing that fit in with the aesthetic of this site.
  • Space Opera. Cyberpunk. Adventure stories. Distant worlds and distant futures.
  • Stories with queer themes that explore different ways of thinking about sexuality and gender.
  • Stories with strong characters, and stories that serialize well, though this might be a redundant statement I look forward to the exceptions to this rule.
  • Forward thinking conceptual stories that engage issues and ideas of contemporary importance and relevance.

I think this medium (and space) is big enough for more voices than just mine and I would love to include additional work and perspectives in this blog. Similarly if you’re blogging fiction, in a similar vein and we’re not already in contact, I’d love to hear about your work.

Also, I’d like to make note of the fact that in general (unless specifically noted otherwise) Critical Futures is licensed under the terms of a Creative Commons, Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike 3.0 license. These terms were chosen specifically to encourage derivative works such as additional stories, and other sorts of art. I can’t promise that I’ll post any or every thing that you send my way of this kind (but I might!). In any case I’d love to be able to keep track of this work for collective enjoyment. Same email address (editor@criticalfutures.com.)

I look forward to hearing from you and working with you soon. In the mean time go read a story.
